Initiative launched to address staffing shortages in the tourism sector

A tourism workforce initiative underpinned by a charter focused on employee growth and retention has been unveiled in a bid to tackle post-COVID-19 workforce decline.

Jamaican Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett unveiled the cross-industry collaboration group at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London, United Kingdom (UK), at a time when hospitality, cruises and aviation A “significant number” of 44 million global tourism workers are not returning after the pandemic, meaning one in six vacancies will go unfilled.

The task force believes that it is necessary to increase the annual growth rate to more than 30%.

It will focus on key areas such as wages, working conditions, career paths, empowerment and communication that need immediate improvement.

Quantifiable annual objectives will be set as well as “ongoing” commitments from the sector towards the financing of activities. Enhanced global mentoring and employment programs can be provided through a global portal.

“The tourism industry must regain its appeal to workers and should undergo a thorough and thorough analysis of the factors that have given rise to this situation,” noted Minister Bartlett.

“Tourism, before the pandemic, has not been the best employer and many see our sector as low paid, low skilled and seasonal, offering little job security and social security. Hence the need for a new charter to reimagine labor market relations, the re-architecture of the social contract between workers and employers in industry.

Negative employment threatens the integrity of the promise to deliver a seamless and exceptional experience to destination visitors, according to Bartlett.

Led by Travel Weekly’s parent Jacobs Media Group (JMG), the Resilience Council, which Bartlett co-chairs, and the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Center (GTRCMC), the cross-industry collaborative working group is being formed with participants from the whole sector. .
